The Gungahlin region is the most northern district in the ACT, and is located approximately 10km from the Canberra city centre.  Gungahlin is also a suburb in its own right, and together with Amaroo, Ngunnawal, Palmerston, Franklin, Harrison, Mitchell, Crace, Nicholls, Casey, Bonner, Forde and Moncreiff they make up the region of Gungahlin.

The town of Gungahlin was part of the original 1957 plan for future development in the ACT and in 1991 was  officially launched as Canberra’s fourth ‘town’ by the ACT Chief Minister.  Back then, the population of Gungahlin was just 389 residents.  Today it stands at 43,000 and this figure is expected to rise to 60,000 by the year 2016.

The word Gungahlin is Aboriginal in origin and means little rocky hill. Up until the late 1960s and during colonial times, the Gungahlin that we know today was part of the former farmlands of Ginninderra. Free settlers established wheat and sheep properties such as ‘Weetangara’, ‘Gold Creek ,’The Valley’, ‘Horse Park’and ‘Tea Gardens’. Much of the local produce supplied the large workforce at goldfields located at Braidwood and Major’s Creek.

Now a vibrant, young and rapidly growing region, Gungahlin ACT is centrally located in regards to all regional attractions. It is within a comfortable two hours drive of Australia’s snow fields, famous trout fishing lakes and the pristine beaches of the New South Wales south coast. It is also only 290km from Sydney and 655 km from Melbourne.

The local facilities in Gungahlin are growing rapidly to match its expanding population.  The new Gungahlin Community Health Centre is in the process of being built and is due to open in the latter half of 2012.  Siren bar and restaurant has recently opened directly opposite the Gungahlin Police Station in the Abode Hotel complex, providing a stylish option for a night out with family and friends close to home.

The Gungahlin College opened in 2011, and within 3 years there will be 900 students attending this school.  The Gungahlin College is also home to the Gungahlin Library, a brand new state of the art library which is open to the general public.

Takeaway food shops abound with no less than four pizza shops, including the popular Crust pizza, located in the Gungahlin Town Centre.  There is also the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club that is currently completing renovations in its restaurant, and is perfect for a meal with the family after a game of golf.

The Gungahlin Town Centre is home to many specialty shops and major retailers such as Big W, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi.  Just down the road from the Gungahlin shopping centre is the major hardware store Magnet Mart.

In more recent news, it has been announced that in 2014 part of the Treasury Department of the ACT Government will relocate to Gungahlin in a purpose built government office block.  This is great news for Gungahlin business owners and investors as it means more jobs for our local region, and more people working in the Gungahlin Town Centre.
